2022: French crowdfunding market financed €2 billion

In 2022, French crowdfunding platforms collected 2.35 billion euros. This is a growth of 25 percent compared to 2021. The increase was mostly caused by the increase in real estate crowdfunding, which accounted for two thirds of the total funding amount.

Since 2015, the French crowdfunding market has multiplied by 14. In total, over 7 billion euros have been cumulatively collected since then. These data come from the newly published Crowdfunding Barometer 2022, from Mazars and the Financement Participatif France (FPF).

Real estate crowdfunding grew 40%

According to the report, real estate crowdfunding in particular showed a strong growth. In 2022, it grew 40.2 percent compared to a year earlier. The sector financed 1.6 billion euros last year, while in 2021 the sector was worth 1.15 billion euros.

In 2022, 1,628 real estate crowdfunding projects were financed.

Additionally, the number of projects financed in 2022 reached 1.628, while a year earlier it was 1.346. Most of the financed projects were residential (71 percent). During 2022, 562 projects were reimbursed for 382 million euros.

Other crowdfunding sectors

While real estate crowdfunding is the main driver behind the market’s growth, sustainable financing is also an important segment. In total, 552 million euros were raised for social or environmental projects. On the other hand, crowdfunding by donation amounted to 106.7 million euros. This was a decline compared to a year earlier.

The growth in interest-bearing loans show need for more financing methods.

Crowdfunding in lending rose from 1.58 billion euros in 2021 to 2.1 billion in 2022. Interest-bearing loans grew from 260 million euros in 2021 to 302.5 million last year. According to the report, this shows a need for SMEs to find new sources of financing.

‘Crowdfunding meets needs of all types of sectors’

“The interest of crowdfunding for the financing of the economy no longer needs to be proven. This collection tool meets the needs of all types of sectors, as evidenced by the growth – again this year – in volumes collected, and the number of existing platforms in France”, said Damien Guermonprez, president of FPF. “With the entry into force of the European Regulation, 2023 is a pivotal year for lending and investment platforms in financial securities, which must obtain the new authorization of Crowdfunding Service Provider.”
