French crowdfunding declines second year in a row

In 2024, crowdfunding in France collected a total of 1.7 billion euros. Compared to a year earlier, the market decreased 17.1 percent. Since 2015, crowdfunding in France has financed more than 10 billion euros.
These data come from the 2024 Crowdfunding Barometer from France Fintech and Forvis Mazars. In 2023, the French crowdfunding market financed a total of 2.09 billion euros. Compared to 2022, that was a decline of 11.3 percent.
The decrease in crowdfunding was also visible last year, with an even stronger decline of 17.1 percent. However, when looking at the two halves of 2024, the second half performed better with a total of 901 million euros. In the first half, 830 million euros were collected.
Real estate crowdfunding continues decreasing
Just like in 2023, real estate crowdfunding declined last year. In 2023, the sector still represented the majority of the crowdfunding market. But last year, it recorded a decline of 25.9 percent. The sector now only represent 49.7 percent of the total market.
Donation crowdfunding increased 11.5%
Renewable energy crowdfunding also declined last year, with 4 percent. It now represents 20.3 percent of the total market. In 2023, the sector still increased 11.5 percent. The sector that did show growth was donation crowdfunding. It increased 11.5 percent, coming to a total of 178.9 million euros.
‘Less flamboyant year’
“Unsurprisingly, 2024 is a less flamboyant year for crowdfunding, which continues to suffer from the crisis in the real estate sector. The symbolic threshold of 10 billion euros in fundraising was crossed this year, affirming the key role that crowdfunding plays in the financial landscape”, says Bertrand Desportes, partner at Forvis Mazars.
‘New structuring of the sector drives growth of crowdfunding in France and Europe’
“Furthermore, the progressive structuring of the sector with the PSFP approval and the passporting mechanism, still in its infancy, opens up significant growth prospects for the sector in France and Europe. Regarding 2025, emerging themes such as art, health and sport are emerging as major trends to follow.”
